Latics travel to Anfield on Saturday to face Liverpool and in the build up to the game I managed to grab a few words with Vital Liverpool editor Gavin Day:
How’s it going so far? Are you disappointed or can you see light?
It’s going ok. Hard to know exactly what our goals should be given we have a weaker squad than the one that could only manage 8th last season and of course a new manager with differing philosophies and tactics etc.
So far our performances have been pretty good generally speaking but defensive errors at the beginning of the season and more recently a lack of goals have made it difficult to turn good play into victories.
Most Liverpool fans can see the team developing however and remain positive – heartened predominantly by the youthful nature of the side.
How have the new signings settled in?
Mixed to be honest. Joe Allen has done very well overall whilst Nuri Sahin still seems to be finding his feet after missing most of last season at Real Madrid through injury. Unfortunately Fabio Borini is out long-term with a broken foot which leaves us desperately short of viable options to support Luis Suarez up front. Elsewhere we’ve not really seen enough of Oussama Assaidi to pass judgement and any other signings were mainly for the youth team.
Sterling, is he the real deal, heard lot’s about him but what’s he like week in week out?
He certainly seems to be! After only a dozen or so games for the first-team it seems strange to be getting so carried away with a player but Sterling has certainly warranted the praise to date.
His pace, skill and directness clearly excite fans but, given he is only 17, it is the awareness, attitude and composure that really sets him aside.
It’s worrying to think where we would be without Sterling to be honest because behind Suarez he has probably been our most consistent performer this term.
Did you get the right man in Rodgers, or are the troops restless already?
It’s too early to tell if Rodgers is the right man to be honest. It’s been a difficult start with a lack of backing in the transfer market and an awful run of opening fixtures but there is certainly no suggestion of the fans turning on him as yet.
We’re clearly a club in transition and everyone needs to be patient. After getting rid of Kenny Dalglish and making the bold decision to appoint Rodgers, I’m convinced the owners will give him ample time to turn the club’s fortunes around.
Any Latics player that you`d like to see in a Red shirt?
Well up until he left, Victor Moses! Now I’m not so sure… I like your young midfield duo James McArthur and James McCarthy but it’s not really a position we require more players in.
How do you feel the Latics will fare this season?
Given the way you finished last season and how you’ve faired so far this, I certainly don’t think you should be in your annual relegation fight this time around. You have a solid team who are hard to beat and I think mid-table safety should be easily achievable.
How do you see the game going?
Our home form during 2012 has been woeful but there is a feeling, after six games unbeaten, that we’ve turned a corner. Our defence has improved markedly in the last few weeks so I cannot see you scoring many, if at all. Therefore we should win unless you manage to stop Suarez from having a single touch! 🙂 2-0 LFC victory.
Big thanks to Gavin for taking the time to answer my questions
