See this is how you make a club self-sustainable.

Here in Fraser Fyvie we have bought a player who is young and inexpensive and doubtless on low wages as well. The SPL isn’t a particularly strong league but to be in the first team from the age of 16 means he’s got some talent already. Obviously Martinez and our scouts see something in him as well. So you’ve got a low-risk-high-ceiling player coming in, and he’s still in the midst of his development at only 19 so clearly he’s got a good bit of potential.

Now of course like any player (even the pricey ones) there’s a chance he doesn’t pan out but let’s say he does. At 22 or 23 he’s a Scotland international (not a huge stretch) and a regular first teamer and still with the prime of his career to come. Perfect time, in other words, for a Villa or a Chelsea (depending on how good he is) to come snap him up, leaving us with a good chunk of money to put back into the transfer and wage budget.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Except this extra money means more to spend on better youngsters, which means better players, a better team, and eventually even more money the next cycle. Not to mention that we get the services of some high-quality players in the interim. And once we can pay them competent wages, some of them might even be inclined to stay.

Roberto Martinez understands this, and he understands it well. He’s shown us before with signings like Victor Moses and James McCarthy and our new investment in our own youth facilities is an exercise in this as well. It’s a long term project that has been going on for years now, and I’m inclined to think it’s why he turned down some pretty darn good job opportunities to see it – or at least the foundation of it – through.

And I commend him for it. Every last bit of it, including the Fraser Fyvie signing today. Is it making waves across Europe? Surely no, and I doubt it’s even having much of an impact across Wigan. But in the scope of the grand scheme of things, it’s important that Mr. Martinez knows that there’s at least one onlooker who thinks it’s absolutely brilliant.
