The run of nine Premier League games without a win came to a halt as the Latics left the Stadium of Light with all three points after Franco Di Santo side footed home a late, late winner.

Roberto Martinez named the same eleven that drew last weekend with Blackburn, a shaky start though from the away side looked like a tough afternoon was in store and when Sunderland went ahead on just eight minutes it was no more than they deserved.

A tame Bendtner shot was spilled by Ali Al-Habsi, Richardson hit the ball goalwards, Ali made the block but Larsson was on hand to crack home the loose ball, 1-0 and Sunderland were well on top.

The Latics looked nervous for the next twenty minutes, Al-Habsi made amends for his slip with a couple of excellent stops from Richardson and Brown, but slowly Martinez’s men started to get a grip in the game, the possession football took the sting out of Sunderland and on the stroke of half time Wigan drew level.

Moses skipped past Larsson in the penalty area, the former Birmingham man stuck out a foot and clipped Moses’ heal, down he went and referee, Kevin Friend had no hesitation pointing to the penalty spot. Up stepped Jordi Gomez to send Keiren Westwood the wrong way, 1-1.

The second half saw the Latics grow more into the game, Ronnie Stam was having great success with some rampaging runs down the right, up front Conor Sammon was excellent chasing every ball, though Sunderland did have a couple of chances it was the Latics who stole the game right at the death.

Two substitutes, James McArthur and Franco Di Santo combined to give the Latics their first win since August

A long clearance from Maynor Figueroa was chased down by Di Santo, he pressurised Wes Brown to hit a back pass to his keeper, the Argentine striker closed down Westwood who gave the ball back to Brown, in stepped McArthur to nick the ball away from the former Manchester United player, draw the keeper then calmly slip in Di Santo to side foot home his fourth goal of the season and win the game for the Latics, 1-2.
