The latest name, admittedly in a long list of names, being linked with a move to the Latics is 29 year old Sunderland and Scotland international striker Steven Fletcher.
Undoubtedly a quality frontman, he has been around the top flight for quite a while now, Burnley, Wolves and Sunderland all benefiting from his goalscoring prowess and ability to bring others into play.
Fletcher will be out of contract at the Stadium of Light at the end of this month, he made 16 Premier League appearances for Sunderland this past season, 11 starts, and scored 4 goals, he spent the second half of the campaign out on loan at French club Marseille, joining them on the 1st February.
It is no secret that the Latics are looking to bring in a quality striker to play alongside Will Grigg, could Fletcher fit the bill?
The former Hibernian striker is well known to Gary Caldwell having played together at Hibs and on the international stage with Scotland. Fletcher also played with Caldwell’s brother Steven during their time together at Burnley and he is also a player that needs no introduction to fans and coaches alike.
There could, or more likely would be a problem around Fletcher’s wage demands, having been signed by Sunderland for £12 million in 2012 he will be on a fair whack and we have a strict wage structure in place that is there for the long term benefit of the club, that would prove to be a stumbling block but if a compromise could be found then he would be a class signing and show an intent to challenge at the top end of the Championship.
