Signing players from overseas can be a nightmare and you have got to feel sorry for the Chief Executives of clubs who need to sort through the red tape like Wigan Athletics Brenda Spencer.

The Latics are close to signing at least three and possibly four overseas players with three coming from outside the European Union this is a lot of red tape to overcome

In order to sign a non EU national a work permit must be attained and to get one of these the player needs to have played for his country in at least 75% of its competitive ‘A` team matches he was available for selection, during the two years preceding the date of the application.

If that wasn`t complicated enough the player`s country must be at or above 70th place in the official FIFA world rankings when averaged over the two years preceding the date of the application.

So Brenda will need to get out her calculator to help with the work permit, her phrase book (Spanish) to help with the negotiations, her calculator again for the wages and her Vodka and Asprin for when its all over on February 1st.
