Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner has spoken about the reasons behind his decision to quit the club this summer.

Speaking on Austrian TV Scharner said: “I feel this summer is the time to take the next step in my career.

“I am not getting any younger and I`m looking towards getting a regular starting place in the Austria national side.

“My absolute aim would be to play in the Champions League. That is any player`s dream.”

Fulham and Aston Villa are said to be interested but it`s more likely that the 29 year old would follow up interest shown by German clubs Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Schalke
