Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner is set to be offered a new three year deal from the Latics as manager Steve Bruce wants to secure the madcap Austrian to the club for the foreseeable future.

Scharner has been a revelation under Bruce and he has reverted to his more comfortable position of centre back since the turn of the year which coincidently has also seen Latics enter a rich vein of form.

Scharner joined Latics from SK Brann of Norway in January 2006 and scored on his debut in the Carling cup semi-final win against Arsenal at the JJB.

Scharns would have been an ever present for Latics this season in the league but he missed one game through suspension, Derby away, for picking up 5 bookings

If Brucie does manage to get Scharner tied down long term it will signal the intent of the club to push forward and could go a long way in attracting good quality players in the transfer window as the Latics aim for Uefa Cup qualification next season
