Rooney Gets Off Scot Free

Oh dear, oh dear, whatever is going on.

First of all we get Wayne Rooney assaulting James McCarthy, from behind, the match referee putting a consoling arm around the scouse thug, there, thering him for injuring his elbow on McCarthys jaw, his manager saying `och aye, there was nay anything in it`, and now the FA doing, well FA as usual.

Seven minutes into Saturdays game between the Latics and Manchester United Ben Watson knocks the ball back to Gary Caldwell, 10 yards away a rampaging Wayne Rooney crashes through the back of James McCarthy planting his elbow and forearm across the back of McCarthy`s head and into his jaw.

Match referee Mark Clattenburg blows his whistle and calls Rooney over, only one option open to him really, a red card, but hang on, a consoling arm around Rooney`s shoulder, a pat on his arse as he walks away after the briefest of brief words, and a wink of his eye at a quizzical Gary Caldwell. You got that one right Clattenburg, not.

Rooney went on to have a hand in all four of United`s goals on Saturday, he scored one and was heavily involved in the build up of the other three, so any retrospective action would not really do the Latics any good, what was needed was some tough action on Saturday.

McCarthy didn`t roll around when he was smashed like so many other players do under much less contact, Jack Wilshere springs to mind, perhaps the Latics although accused by their own fans of being Prima Donnas, aren`t Prima Donna enough. Maybe McCarthy not overreacting made Clattenburgs decision to not take any action against Rooney that bit easier.

Ferguson jumped to the defence of his main man immediately the game was over, `perhaps there`ll be a media witch hunt`, trying to deflect from what he must have known was a serious situation for his star striker.

Well it appears to have worked with the FA ruling no further action following the receipt of Clattenburgs match report. The Latics, like Wolves, West Brom, Blackpool etc seem to get anything but a fair deal when up against the big clubs.

Whatever is going on just doesn`t seem right and something needs to be done, but just like this latest incident nothing will be.
