Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has spoken about the off the field plans of the club in the week that owner Dave Whelan has admitted that he is looking to sell the Latics so has not to burden his family with the debt of running a Premier League club when he has gone.

At 73 and with two of his close friends, John Benson and Ronnie Clayton, dying at the weekend Whelan looks to have thought about his own mortality and decided that now might be the time to let the Latics go.

Martinez says that Whelan is the reason that success has come to Wigan and the rise through the divisions over the past 15 years is down to his long term ambitions.

It appears that the Latics are now getting themselves in to a strong financial position to be a viable proposition for any prospective buyer, at the end of last season the clubs three big earners Mario Melchiot, Paul Scharner and Titus Bramble all left to ease the wage bill and Martinez says the club is healthy financially.

Martinez said: ‘Our chairman is the reason why Wigan Athletic are in the Premier League. He has made all this possible.

‘We always have that short-term plan and long-term ambition. It is important to bring that stability to the football. We always work with those things in mind.

‘We have reduced the wage bill this season and we want to be in a very strong position.

‘Every year we are in a healthier way – we develop our squad and improve our aims. That is always the case.

‘We will always try to work towards the present and the future. It is very important that all Wigan fans know we have got a long-term strategy.

‘The club is getting stronger and stronger month by month.’
