Latics’ pre-season encounter with Hartlepool United, scheduled for 25 July, has been cancelled. Called off. Sent to the great pre-season graveyard to be buried with the ghost of Latics-Man United 2016. It has ceased to be. It is an ex-fixture.

But don’t worry, it isn’t anyone’s fault. The FA’s resident random number generating computer is to blame for pitting Wigan against MK Dons on the opening day of the League One season.

With Latics having to travel 160 miles to Milton Keynes on Saturday 5 August, it has been decided that Hartlepool away on a Tuesday night would be one long-haul away fixture too far.

When you remember that Latics are also travelling to Notts County and Grimsby Town in July, the decision seems quite sensible. Both Latics and Hartlepool have agreed to cancel the fixture, with Paul Cook saying to the Latics official site: ‘We thank Hartlepool for their understanding on this matter.’

So hopefully you haven’t already booked a taxi or made arrangements to hitch hike your way to Hartlepool.

Wigan begin their month of pre-season fixtures on 14 July, when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool visit the DW Stadium. Who needs Pants and Dec’s Friday Night Takeway or Strictly Come Prancing when the rampaging Reds are in town?
