John Filan has said that Mike Pollitt deserves his place in Wigan Athletic’s team.

Pollitt started the season in goal but was then replaced by Filan when he regained fitness following a hernia operation, which went against Jewell’s policy of players retaining their starting place if they performed well.

Filan then suffered a knee injury in the Arsenal game and Pollitt was returned to the the first team and has retained his place ever since, even though Filan is now fit again.

Filan told the official website: ‘It’s always hard when you’re out of the team to get back in, but it’s something I’ve experienced before at other clubs and you just have to work through it,’

‘I’ve always had competition here. To say there has never been competition until Mike (Pollitt) arriving is not true. The way I look at it is that I’ve always had to play well to stay in the side because the fiercest critic I have is myself.

‘Mike’s a great keeper, there’s no doubt about that, and having someone like him at the club is great for Wigan and great for the manager. Everyone wants to do well as individuals, but this season of all seasons, the club is the most important thing.’
