Stuart Pearce is believed to be the number one choice as the next manager of Wigan Athletic should the Latics not win on Saturday

Contrary to reports in one local paper (they get it wrong again) it is understood by Vital Wigan that Dave Whelan has made Saturdays home game against Chelsea a win or bust game for current manager Chris Hutchings

The dreadful run of late coupled with some of the players not being 100% behind the current boss may have led to the decision to look else where for a new captain of the good ship Latics

It is believed that there is a short list of three candidates with Stuart Pearce, the current England under-21 boss, at the top of the list

Pearce earned rave reviews from Whelan when he was manager of Manchester City and Whelan called for a ‘dream team` of Pearce and Jewell to be appointed the next England joint managers.

The others on the list are believed to be Chris Coleman, Graeme Souness

Saturday is a big game and even if there is a Wigan win it is still expected that there will be a change of manager

Stuart Pearce the right choice?
