Former Wigan Athletic player Paul Scharner has joined Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion on a two year deal with the Baggies official website announcing the signing

Scharner left the Latics at the end of last season ending 4 ½ years at the DW Stadium and in his time at Wigan the madcap Austrian made over 100 Premier League appearances setting a top flight record for the club.

Although there was a contract extension on offer for Scharner he had decided that the time was right for him to move on and Latics boss Roberto Martinez thanked him for his service to the club.

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is delighted to have secured Scharner to a deal at the Hawthorns and he told wba.co.uk: ‘I’m delighted to welcome Paul to the club.

‘He is exactly the type of player we’ve been looking to bring in because he is a proven Premier League player, having performed consistently well in the top flight for the past four-and-a-half years.
