Wigan Athletic and France attacking midfield man Olivier Kapo suffered what was first thought to be a very serious injury in Monday`s friendly against Hannover 96 at the Latics Austrian training camp.

The immediate diagnosis was cruciate ligament damage which would have seen Kapo out for the entire season but following further assessment and scans it has been determined as strained anterior ligaments, still painful but a lot less serious.

Speaking on the injury Latics boss Roberto Martinez told the clubs official website: ‘Our initial assessment was that it could have been a cruciate injury which can wipe out virtually a whole season, so in that sense we are actually quite happy it is not that serious.

‘Injuries like this are a part and parcel of the game, you cannot control it. It is a shame because Olivier had been doing very well. He is a very gifted player technically and he had been really impressing me in training. But he needs to be patient now and do everything he can to regain his fitness.’
