Don’t expect to see too many familiar faces in the Wigan line-up for Wednesday’s Carling Cup fixtures with Newcastle United.

Vital Quotes:

Paul Jewell said ‘We obviously want to win the game and progress as far as we can, although I feel there might be a bit more pressure on them to get the win.

Wigan Team News:

Don’t expect to see too many familiar faces in the Wigan line-up for Wednesday’s Carling Cup fixtures with Newcastle United.

Paul Jewell is certain to keep to his policy of resting key plays ahead of the Premier League with Liverpool on Saturday. I would expect to see 7 or 8 changes from the team that played Spurs last Saturday.

Liverpool have a league match on Wednesday night against Sunderland so hopefully the rested Latics players will have the advantage at Anfield.

One player who will not be playing is John Filan who has a minor knee injury and won’t be risked, which means Mike Pollitt will be in goal.

Almost certain to play:-

McMillan, Jackson and Taylor in defence.
Mahon, Skoko and Teale in midfield.
Johansson and Connolly in attack.

With Thome and Wright out on loan, the remaining centre-back position could be De Zeeuw or Henchoz, but I would favour trying out Chimbonda who can also play in that role and it would be worth trying him out there.

With no obvious defensive midfielder amongst the three mentioned, I would imagine Francis or Kavanagh being given another game.

Player to watch: Mike Pollitt

Will be eager to prove himself and get the shirt for the forthcoming matches against Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United.

Newcastle Team News:

Owen is out injured

Player to watch: Alan Shearer

Not because he is any good anymore, but as his skill declines he is getting more aggressive and dirty.
