Liverpool v Wigan Athletic at Anfield on Saturday will be refereed by former Leicester postman Kevin Friend, he has taken charge of one previous Latics game this season, the 2-2 draw against Everton at the DW back at the start of October
The 41 year old whistle blower took charge of this seasons Community Shield season curtain raiser between Chelsea and Manchester City, he went a bit mental with the cards, issuing eight yellows and one red, I hope he’s a bit more restrained on Saturday
Friend has been refereeing since he was just 13 and made the grade all the way to the top when on 20th September 2009 he took charge of the Premier League game between Wolves and Fulham.
Friend said about his appointment to the big league – ‘I’m chuffed to bits and really thrilled’
‘It is also a big challenge because it will be completely different to what I’m used to.
‘There’s a lot of pressure in the Premier League and there’s a lot of money involved. I’ve been fourth official at all the big venues, but being out there in the middle will be a totally new experience.
‘My promotion means I’m now full-time which allows me to concentrate solely on the football.’
So Friend emptied his sack for the final time in 2009, delivering his last letters before ensuring the letter of the law of football was observed on the field of play, I think it’s fair to say weve had a mixed bag off him since.
