The Wigan Athletic v Real Zaragoza friendly at the DW Stadium this evening will be officiated by St. Helens referee Chris Foy who took charge of last seasons FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth.

Everton fan Foy started refereeing back in 1983 when he thought he could do a better job than the guy who was in charge of a game he was playing in and he has gone on to reach the top of his profession.

Below is a recent interview Foy conducted with the very informative website refworld.com

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

Got into refereeing after a poor performance from a Referee who was officiating one of our matches.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Being promoted to the Premier League list in 2000, being one of the 24 professional Referees in the country and of course refereeing the FA Cup final at the end of last season.

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

The best game was the FA Trophy at the new Wembley – the first competitive match held on that ground.

What skills do you think you need to become a professional Referee?

A good positive attitude, a willingness to listen and learn and a few years refereeing the big games on the Football League.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

My dad he accompanied me in the early years and still rings me before and after matches. Also Dave Allison who has just been appointed as Referee Manager for the Football League. He was my coach and did a great job.

In your opinion who is/was the best Referee?

Howard Webb and Mark Clattenburg both have great futures. George Courtney, two World Cups and a top Ref.
