Its playoff time and the Latics are set to face QPR at the DW Stadium on Friday as the race for Premier League begins in earnest. With so much at stake it is important to have a decent referee in charge to ensure that there are no shenanigans, who have we got? Mike Jones that’s who.
This will be the third time this season that the Chester based official as officiated a game involving the Latics, he took charge of the clash with Burnley at the DW Stadium on the 29th December, that fixture ended 0-0 with no serious talking points, then there was the FA cup 4th round tie against Premier League Crystal Palace which we won 2-1, again no serious talking points.
The 46 year old official has been in charge of just the one QPR game this campaign, that came back in September at Loftus Road when the Hoops beat Birmingham 1-0.
I thought Jones may prove to be a lucky ref for the Latics, his first ever Premier League game was our 5-1 away win at Hull back in August 2008 when that man Zaki grabbed a brace.
The 45 year old whistle blower started refereeing because he was awful at football and sick of being left out at school when the other boys were kicking the ball around, so he took to enforcing the laws of the game at the tender age of 15.
Jones was promoted to become a football league referee in 1997 and progressed to the Premier League in 2008 when he took charge of the Hull City v Wigan Athletic game, in an interview Mike was asked:
What is the best game you have officiated and why?
He replied: ‘The best game for a sense of achievement was my first Premier League Game between Hull City and Wigan Athletic.’
