Reports in the media indicate that Martinez is not worried about the clubs relatively quiet summer in the transfer market.

Although Latics have already netted Jordi Gomez and Hendry Thomas, many fans are concerned that Wigan have not done enough to counter the loss of Antonio Valencia, and the looming departure of Paul Scharner.

‘It is a time of year where there are a lot of phone calls, a lot of rumours and a lot of people trying to get information,’ the Spaniard told The Wigan Evening Post.

‘But we are just focused on trying to get the details right for pre-season, and getting ready for when the boys come back. Everyone is due back on July 8, apart from the players who have been involved in internationals, and until then we will see what develops.

‘Lee Cattermole and the others are going to be joining us a week later, ready for the Austria trip, and they’ll need that extra time off ahead of what will be a very tough season.

‘I am planning to speak to everyone, but I don’t think it is the right time yet because it is vital that the players have a proper break. You are never going to stop media speculation and other clubs talking about our players – that is part and parcel of the game.

‘But I will make sure I speak to every one of the players and reassess everyone’s goals. I want to keep hold of everyone – that is clear – but on the other hand you don’t want to have any players around who feel their time at the club is up.’

While many Wigan fans may be worried about the transfer window, none of us should forget that Bruce acquired Marlon King in a panic, which should be reason enough for anybody to urge calm.

‘If it is right for Wigan, we’re not going to stop anyone leaving. We only want players who are desperate to play for us and want to win games on a consistent basis,’ he concluded.

Hopefully he is referring to the likes of Bouaouzan and Kapo, rather than Cattermole and Rodders.
