Wigan Athletic are ready to offer Celtic £3.5 million for Australia international striker Scott McDonald according to the Daily Mirror, despite the player about to have a hernia operation.

McDonald was all set to be a deadline day signing back in August only for the deal to fall through at the last minute but it looks like Latics boss Roberto Martinez is determined to get his man, he was up in Glasgow at the weekend to see the Aussie come on as a sub to put Celtic 1-0 up in the Old Firm game.

Apparently there has been a fall out between McDonald and Celtic manager Tony Mowbray with the striker pushing for more starts as he tries to force his way in to the Australia squad ahead of next summers World Cup finals.

The Latics are desperate for extra firepower with summer signing Jason Scotland still awaiting his first goal as a Wigan player and Martinez knows as we get to the business end of the season goals are what are needed to win points and keep teams in the Premier League.
