Liverpool V Wigan: Now or never for Rafa!

Wigan take the trip to Anfield to face a Liverpool side in the wake of a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal – I thought when I watched the game it would end 2-2. However, it wasn’t to be and Liverpool’s season is in grave danger of being mediocre. Despite Rafa’s insistence they can still finish in the top four, in reality they will need to win virtually ALL of their remaining fixtures – that’s not going to happen… is it?

At least in Liverpool’s eyes, there will be no better tonic than to face a Wigan outfit that has been just like Liverpool. Heavily inconsistent. However, Liverpool will be eager to put on a show, not just to inspire their own confidence, but also in the memory of Bill Shankly – I believe they’ll come racing out of the blocks at Anfield and that the Latics could be in for a tough evening.

That said, the last two games at Anfield have been crackers – Titus Bramble’s goal counted for a meaningful point in the rocket that flew into Pepe Reina’s net. Its a goal that will live long in the memory. Its just a shame Zaki’s brace didn’t otherwise that could’ve been our first win against top four opposition. Nevertheless, the feat was eventually accomplished with a great win over Carlo Ancelotti’s troops.

Worryingly, after Bolton’s impressive win over West Ham last night, the Latics are looking tenatively over their shoulders at other teams who are beginning to catch up with them. However, Wigan really don’t have a great deal to lose in tonight’s game but if they can come away with anything, it’d be a brilliant result. It would also give credibility to Roberto Martinez whose developing into a promising manager. Although his season with the Latics has been heavily inconsistent, as it has been said, the signs are there. A point at Stoke is a good foundation to build on.

I don’t believe that the Latics will leave Anfield with a point – I expect the game to be a tense affair and Liverpool will pile on the pressure. I expect the Latics may score first, but Liverpool will win it. It will pave the way for a massive game against Bolton on the weekend and if we win that, it’ll be a massive win as it will put Megson’s men firmly back into trouble. It may even bring a flurry of smiles to Latics supporters as well.

ROB’S PREDICTION
================

The Spanish Armada are out tonight in an interesting battle. Liverpool will want to ensure the night goes smoothly, especially in the memory of Bill Shankly. That said, Liverpool are strangely inconsistent and have won just three premier league games out of several so they’ll want to put the record straight. In all truth, its now or never for Rafa and he must show it with a good result against the Latics. I believe the Latics may put in a good show, but that Liverpool may just shade this one.

Liverpool 2 Wigan 1

ROB’S FINAL THOUGHT
===================

The Latics have to try and get a win against Gary Megson’s troops on the weekend. If they can, it will be a massive boost to the boys in blue and white and they really need something to get their season running. A point at Stoke was a good start, but lets get the engine hot and ready for a good run for the Latics.
