Wigan Athletic young goalkeeper Lee Nicholls has put pen to paper on a new contract that will keep the 19 year old England youth international at the club until June 2014 at least.

There are high hopes for Nicholls and Latics boss Roberto Martinez is delighted to have him tied down for teh next two years, speaking to the clubs official website Martinez said: ‘Lee has made good progress over the last two seasons, but we do think that now he is ready to take the next step in fulfilling his enormous potential.

‘He has worked on the technicality of his position, and now is a great time for him to develop the maturity and the standards required for a professional goalkeeper at the highest level.

‘We’re all excited at Wigan Athletic to see Lee taking the final step in his development.’

The Latics official site also report that the youngster is over the moon, Nicholls himself saying: ‘I’ve learned so much whilst I have been here under goalkeeper coach Iniaki Bergara but also training every day with Chris Kirkland, Mike Pollitt and Ali Al Habsi has been an incredible experience for me.

‘I just want to learn and improve and hopefully start fighting for my place in the team sooner rather than later.’
