Latics Reserves Held to Goalless Draw

Latics Reserves 0-0 Manchester United Reserves

Graham Barrow`s boys maintained their magnificent unbeaten home record at Robin Park this afternoon in a highly disciplined performance against a strong Manchester United – they even had a great chance to win it at the death.



Graham Barrow has now not seen his vibrant young team beaten at Robin Park Arena since February 16 last year, and he was again full of praise for his side after a really tough game: “There were some great individual performances against an experienced team,” he said, “and considering I had to bring in some of the younger lads, they did really well. We even had a chance to nick it at the end.



“Callum McManaman wasn`t playing as he`s been called into the First Team squad and his example has given the whole squad a massive lift because they can see that if you play well and consistently enough at this level, there is a way to progress at this club.”



Latics stay second place of the Barclays Premier Reserve League after shutting out a Manchester United`s side that included England defender Wes Brown, alongside £8 million signing Bebe and French striker Gabriel Obertan. Latics only included Adrian Lopez for the first half from the senior squad.



United dominated long periods of the game, but Latics never lost their defensive discipline, and when the visitors did manage to create chances, England Under 19 goalkeeper Lee Nicholls was on hand, putting in another highly impressive display between the posts.



Obertan provided United`s greatest threat, and his best chance of the first half came late on, driving from outside the box, but Nichools dove down sharply to his left to parry the shot around the post.



Latics` Spanish defender Roman Golobart had the home sides best chance before the break, but his header flashed wide when he rose highest at a corner.



United pressed again after the break, with Obertan and substitute Will Keane again testing Nicholls, but Latics had a glorious opportunity to clinch the points at the death when livewire midfielder Daniel Redmond wriggled free on the edge of the box and fired in hard and low, Conor Devlin saving really well to deny him.



The only negative note on another good afternoon for The Reserves came in the first half, when Northern Ireland Under 21 midfielder Jonathan Breeze was carried off with ankle ligament damage, following a tackle with his international team mate Joshua King.
