Latics-backed RUN4ALIFE Fun Run raises £9,000 for cancer charity
Latics manager Roberto Martinez joined Wigan Rotary President Colin Wilkinson at the Christopher Park training ground to receive a cheque for £9,000 on behalf of the Everyman Campaign for research into men’s cancers. The money was raised through the RUN4ALIFE event, held last September at Haigh Hall.
The five kilometre run for men, organised by Wigan Rotary Club, is now in its sixth year and has become an annual fundraising fixture alongside the more established female ‘Race For A Life.
In total, Wigan Rotary Club have donated £60,000 for research into testicular and prostate cancer.
Roberto Martinez received the cheque on behalf of Everyman, which is a FA preferred charity, and urged all Latics supporters to get behind this year’s event which will be held on Sunday 25th September at Haigh Hall. New for this year will be a ten kilometre run for serious runners and a five kilometre fun run for families.
He said: ‘It is fantastic that the club and its fans can get behind an event like this, and raise money and awareness for a hugely important campaign.’
Colin Wilkinson was delighted with the outcome and said: ‘I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and their sponsors, and to Wigan Athletic for their help in promoting the event.’
Carrie Rahman Fundraising manager for Everyman said: ‘We are delighted that Wigan Rotary Club have chosen to support Everyman through RUN4ALIFE and we are thrilled to receive such a fantastic donation.
‘There are 37,000 men affected by male cancers each year in the UK alone and the generous support of Wigan Rotary Club and Wigan Athletic will enable Everyman to fund more lifesaving research into the causes and treatment of testicular and prostate cancer.’
