Wigan Athletic were denied the chance to go second in the Premier league with Lee Bowyers equaliser following Paul Scharners opener for the Latics

West Ham went into the game having never beaten the Latics in the Premiership at Upton Park and that fact still remains after this game.

The Hammers started with Zamora up front and a still not fully fit Ashton on the bench, the Latics remained unchanged for the third game on the trot

Latics first real chance of the game came on 25 minutes when Sibierski set up Scharner with a glorious cross from the left

Scharner storming in from midfield should have done better than put his header narrowly wide of West Ham keeper Robert Greens post

Referee Andre Mariner turned down a penalty appeal from West Ham on 30 mins after Noble went down under a challenge from Granqvist and Bellamy had a goal disallowed for offside, replays showed both decisions to be correct

Sibierski had to leave the field on 35 minutes with a tight hamstring, to be replaced by Julius Aghahowa

Jason Koumas almost put the Latics in front on 42 minutes when following a good run by Landzaat the ball fell to Koumas who cut in field from the left and hit a right footed shot that had Green beaten but hit the post

Five minutes after the restart Julius Aghahowa was through one on one with Green but in trying to chip the West Ham keeper he knocked the ball over the bar.

Scharner had a chance on 55 minutes but once again failed to hit the target

Dean Ashton replaced Bobby Zamora on 65 minutes for the Hammers and got a fantastic reception from the home fans, it`s good to see the former Crewe man back playing again after his long lay off

A superb save from Green on 67 minutes denied Aghahowa his first goal for the Latics, following a Koumas free kick

76 minutes Michael Brown replaced Antonio Valencia in the Latics midfield and there was celebrations shortly afterwards as the Latics took the lead

Mario Melchiot took a long throw from the right and Heskey challenged for the ball in the air, it appeared that a West Ham head knocked the ball towards Paul Scharner who struck spectacularly with a bicycle-kick to score his first goal of the season on his 50th appearance in a Latics shirt.

Two minutes later West Ham were level when Lee Bowyer fired home from the right following a good run into Latics box by Dyer

A fair result if a little disappointing to go in front late on and not hang on for all the points
