Remember when I said Wigan’s first pre-season game was against Liverpool this Friday evening? Yeah, turns out I was a chucklehead liar without even knowing it (again).

On Saturday afternoon, Latics played a ‘secret’ friendly with Crewe Alexandra. And I’ll whisper to you the final score if you don’t read into it far too much and make articles on your small time Internet weblogs, OK?

Well, Callum Lang, who recently signed a new pro contract with the club, equalised late on to make the final score 3-3.

Omar Bogle grabbed the opener for Latics, while Callum Ainley, Chris Porter and new pro Josh Lundstram found the net for Crewe. As Wigan are still without a first team keeper, it remains to be officially confirmed whether they were playing rush goalie.

But this was the real start to Wigan’s pre-season. Probably.

I wouldn’t say Twitter has been inundated with opinion about the game, but there have at least been a few acknowledgements that it actually took place:

‘Drew 3-3 with Crewe at the weekend. Why aren’t the real friendlies ever that interesting?’ @JamesSaintLatic

‘For fitness or not no excuse still conceded 3 goals and they are supposed to be athletes with state of the art training gym facilities.’ @Boothy1957

‘Very few have played together regularly and it wasn’t our ‘strongest’ team. You’ve got to give them time. Too early to be jumping on backs.’ @NickTaylor14

‘The meltdown over a 3-3 fitness game behind closed doors against Crewe is pathetic.’ @GreggoHD

I suppose we’ll find out on Friday how accurate these statements could be, as we’ll actually get to witness Wigan Athletic play some football. Not long now to a freshly baked season, my dear reader… I just hope you like quarter-baked fan theories.
