Wigan Athletic Community Trust Walking Football team travelled to St George’s Park, home of England FA’s National Football Centre in Burton on Tuesday, to participate in the Football League Trust Cup finals.

There was, despite a tremendous effort, disappointment for the Latics as they were knocked out in the group stages and failed to make the competition semi-finals.

The Latics were pitched in Group A and faced last year’s winners Plymouth Argyle, Nottingham Forest, Mansfield Town and Middlesbrough. The first game against Plymouth ended goalless with both sides cancelling each other out in a tight affair.

Next up it was Forest, despite dominating most of the game, a lack of a killer instinct was the downfall of the Latics with their opponents scoring in the final minute of the game with a deflected effort to win 1-0.

Mansfield were up next in a must win game for both sides, the Latics came out on top winning 2-0 and it could have been more as once again they dominated proceedings.

So into the final group game against Boro, Forest had already qualified and a win was needed to overhaul Plymouth for the 2nd spot and go forward to the semi’s, once again missed chances and a late goal from the opponents saw Latics suffer another 1-0 defeat and that was that.

Blackpool beat Plymouth, whilst Forest saw off Sheffield United to set up a good final between two highly competitive sides, Blackpool came out on top, so the trophy ended up in the North West, just not in our particular part of the North West.

A great day had by all, despite not progressing to the later rounds, in what is a fabulous venue.
