It appears that the Latics attempts to sign long term target, James Tavernier, from Premier League outfit Newcastle United have taken a step closer to completion, reports in the North East media and Sky Sports claim that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

The 22 year old right sided defender has made just 9 appearances for the Geordies, but he has found success during loan spells at Gateshead, Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons, Shrewsbury and most notably Rotherham United whom he stared with in the League 1 playoff final at Wembley back in May.

“I too saw him in the play off and thought he would be decent addition for us so will be delighted if we can get this one secured.”

He made a total of 27 appearances for the Millers, having initially joined on an emergency loan in November, scoring a very respectable five goals.

If Tavernier signs on the dotted line at the DW that will be three defenders in so far this summer, with Jean Beausejour and Stephen Crainey going as their contracts are due to expire and doubts over the fitness, and suitability of Ramis, Rogne and Caldwell, who is also out of contract, this is prudent business by Rösler.
