In front of the seasons biggest crowd the Latics were well and truly turned over.
Before the game there was a sense of anticipation, but that soon dwindled away as the game kicked off.
Latics looked tired and nervous in the opening minutes, as West Ham played with more urgency and desire.
Baines, Jackson, DeZeeuw and Kilbane were all guilty of giving the ball away needlessly in the opening 20 minutes, with the back four looking very sluggish.
DeZeeuw went off injured on 24 minutes to be replaced by David Unsworth (just to had a little more pace to the back line).
Paul Scharner remained on the bench.
On 30 minutes the Latics conceded yet another farcical goal to add to this seasons catalogue, with Filan once again caught in no-mans land, Boa Morte lobbed the ball over him and into the empty net.
The half-time interval couldn`t come quickly enough as West Ham were truly dominant and threatening to run riot.
Paul Scharner was brought on for the second half, replacing Landzaat in the centre of midfield.
This did nothing to alter the pattern of the game and West Ham continued to press, while the Latics were running around like headless chickens.
There was no quality in possession, and no quality in the delivery of the ball into the area from the men in blue.
Aghahowa replaced Kilbane on 54 minutes to loud cheers from the home supporters. But this did nothing to change the game.
West Ham doubled their lead on 57 minutes.
Following a Skoko free kick, Boyce sent a poor ball into the middle, which was intercepted by McCartney, he ran down the left wing, with Baines trailing behind as though running in treacle.
McCartney knocked the ball into the middle for the unmarked Benayoun to steer home.
Harewood, on as a sub for Zamora, made it 3-0 on 82 minutes, this was a signal for a mass exodus from the home supporters.
In fairness the score line flattered the Latics and something miraculous needs to occur before next Saturday, if we are to get anything out of the game with Middlesbrough.
