Media reports in the North East today, say that Steve Bruce is expected to talk to Sunderland over the weekend about the vacant manager’s post.

Mr Whelan has given Bruce permission to talk to Sunderland but no compensation has been agreed.

If Sunderland decide Bruce is their man, then talks will begin in earnest regarding a suitable recompense, with five million pounds the figure quoted.

Bruce’s move may be expected but is by no means certain, as Sunderland are expected to interview other candidates as well.

Wigan continue to be linked with other managers as replacements with Peterboro’s Darren Ferguson the latest name in the frame.
