Wigan left it late to secure a victory their second half performance deserved and go a long way to securing Premier League status for another season.

Martinez was forced into changes before the game, replacing star player N’Zogbia and steady defender Emerson Boyce, both whom were injured against Villa last week. They were replaced by the versatile Scharner and returning captian Melchiot with McCarthy moving out onto the right wing.

Both teams started brightly, showing a will to attack, with Burnley fielding three strikers in Paterson, Fletcher and Nugent, all of whom troubled the Wigan back four.

At the other end a mis-placed back pass by Jensen saw the ball go out for a corner.McCarthy swung in a fierce corner and Caldwell rose majestically at the back post and powered a bullet header which hit the post and bounced clear.

Both sides were guilty of trying to push to hard and Wigan frequently over hit passes and set pieces with Thomas the most guilty offender.

For Wigan, Diame and McCarthy were the best players in the first half but Moreno and Rodallega didnt trouble Jensen in the Burnley goal.

Wigan started the second half with more purpose,McCarthy once again the creative force but once again the home side struggled to pressurise Jensen in the Burnley goal with Moreno being guilty of not shooting when in ideal positions.

At the other end Fletcher who had a torrid battle with Caldwell was put through but was unable to finish. The next most notable event was the sad report of Kirkland apparently being struck by a missile thrown from the away supporters.
Burnley tired as the game went on but still created the next real chance when Paterson broke through on the right wing, beat the underperforming Figueroa and fired a superb shot which beat Kirkland but thankfully for Wigan the shot hit the bar and Melchiot was able to clear.

Wigan replaced Thomas with the pacier Moses and Latics play immeadately began to show an improvement, with Rodallega having a shot ‘scramble cleared’ off the line and Jensen produced two first class saves from Scotland and Diame within a minute.

As the game went into injury time, Moses sent in a pin point cross which was met by the diving head of top scorer Rodallega , straight into the net to send the home players and fans into paroxysms of delight.

    A vital win geddit?

McCarthy is so good. Diame was epic also. I love it when it seems like he is going to get closed down and the ball taken off him and he just nonchalantly does a little move and evades like 2 or 3 players.

Momo Diame is the new Patrick Vieira. I thought we did well today it was never going to be easy and we stuck at it

He is starting to inch forward also as the season progresses, he has a fierce shot and I think he would do well to pull the trigger more from outside the box, you never know when a keeper will fumble a shot.
