The Latics have confirmed that keeper Chris Kirkland signed for Championship club Doncaster Rovers on a three month loan deal, below is the official press release sent to Vital Latics:
Wigan Athletic can confirm that goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has joined Championship side Doncaster Rovers on-loan until January.
Following the completion of the deal this afternoon, the club are now in a position to officially confirm that the former Coventry City, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion stopper has made his temporary move.
The club do have the option of calling back Kirkland in case of emergency during that time and Manager Roberto Martinez is hopeful the move will be of massive benefit for the 30-year-old:
“Chris has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes in training and has always shown true professionalism in his work and attitude,” said Martinez.
“We hope that him playing regular first-team, competitive football will not only reward his efforts but also provide him with the right challenge so as to return to the club in January ready to help the squad.”
Kirkland joined Latics on a permanent basis in October 2006 after a loan-spell from Liverpool and having made his England debut against Greece.
Over the six seasons he has been at the club the ‘keeper has made 131 league appearances, and 143 in all competitions.
Kirkland is eligible to feature for Doncaster in Friday night`s live televised league match against Leeds United at the Keepmoat Stadium with a 19.45 kick off on Sky Sports 1.
