The return to the Latics of former player of the season Jordi Gomez was first touted on Vital Wigan back in January, the classy Spaniard is believed to have been high on the ‘wanted’ list of the recruitment team at the DW Stadium for the past six months and now it looks likely that his homecoming could soon be a reality.

With a year still to run on his contract at Premier League Sunderland this appeared to be a major stumbling block, but word coming out of the North East is that the Wearsiders are prepared to ‘pay up’ the remainder of Gomez’s contract making him a free agent.

The recently turned 31 year old spent the last half of the 2015/16 season on loan at Championship club Blackburn Rovers, he made 19 appearances scoring three times. His time at Sunderland though has been less successful, Gomez made an initial impact at the Stadium of Light, featuring 29 times in his first season there, but he has found opportunities limited under Sam Allardyce and had just six appearances last term leading to the decision to allow him to leave.

A player of Gomez’s undoubted qualities would be a great asset to the Latics as they come to terms with life in the Championship once again, he is well known to the management, coaching staff and fans alike, he would bring experience to the attacking edge of the midfield and playing just behind Will Grigg the man on fire would certainly be supplied with chances to continue his goal scoring exploits.

In my opinion Gomez would be a great signing for Wigan Athletic, also I wouldn`t be surprised if he was used in some capacity within the coaching set up at the club, Jordi Gomez back at the Latics – yes please.
