Former Latics striker Jason Roberts poked the ball past goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, and McCarthy tapped into an open net.

Despite scoring in an offside position, the flag stayed down and the powerful striker scored his second goal in four days.

Jewell told the official website:’I think McCarthy’s goal was more than a little bit (offside), but it still counts so there’s no point me coming in for this interview ranting and raving.’

‘We knew Blackburn had had a match on Thursday and the plan was to catch them cold and it worked well but the timing of the equaliser was really a kick in the teeth for us.’

‘Blackburn came out for the second half full of energy and we rode the storm, but we got the penalty incident and we started wondering if it was going to be our day.’

‘If that had gone in, I think we would have won the game but all of a sudden their keeper saves two rebounds, it gives their fans a lift and they get on the end of a hoof which was arguably offside.’

Jewell also expressed frustration with another impending international break as he still attempts to mould his new-look side into the force they were in the Premiership last season.

‘Bedding in seven new players was never going to be easy,’ added Jewell. ‘It is going to be tough, it’s going to be a fight. I am up for it and I hope everybody else is too.’
