Paul Jewell has revealed why he turned down the chance to manage the Latics a second time when Dave Whelan offered him his old job back in November after the sacking of Chris Hutchings.

Jewell revealed that he was offered a substantial amount of money to come back to the JJB but he felt that doing the job just for the cash was the wrong reason to come back

‘I was very proud that we stayed up but it was 100 per cent right for me to turn them down. There was a lot of money involved but I’d taken them as far as I could even though I could have kept them up again.

‘I walked into the dressing room after we’d stayed up last May and said that I’d really enjoyed it. If I’d have gone back it would have been for the wrong reasons. The players needed fresh ideas. It needed a new regime and it wouldn’t have been right.’

Jewell at least was honest enough to admit he had taken the Latics as far as he could and in the opinion of Vital Wigan Paul Jewell will always be a Latics Legend for what did for the club in his time here
