Real Madrid fringe striker and former Wigan Athletic target Javier Saviola has been linked again with a move to the DW Stadium, in the wake of the expected fire sale out of the Madrid club.

Once hailed as one of the most promising footballers in the world, as well as the youngest on Pele’s FIFA 100 list, Saviola’s star has cooled since joining Madrid on a free in 2007 and finding himself limited to substitute and Copa Del Rey appearances.

Latics, however, could be prepared to give the diminutive Argentine – said to be valued at around £5m – an escape route, especially with new Spanish manager Roberto Martinez fully aware of his talents.

Should Latics be able to fight off other interest in the number 9 and draw him to the Premier League, he would surely be an inspired signing for the new manager, and ensure a bright start to his term here, even with winger Antonio Valencia’s expected imminent departure.
