Latics defender Jason Pearce has had his ludicrous red card picked up in Tuesday night’s defeat away at Millwall rescinded on appeal.

Inexperienced referee Steve Martin should never have been appointed to officiate the game, he was clearly intimidated throughout by both the home players and supporters, he failed to clamp down on the Millwall players tactic of kicking the ball away at every throw-in and free kick and he looked like he couldn’t wait to get his card out to wave Pearce off after what was a hard, but very fair challenge.

Pearce was wrongly sent off with 12 minutes plus stoppage time remaining, virtually ending the game as a contest with the Latics going down to nine men. Unfortunately, even though the dismissal clearly affected the result of the game, the Latics have to grin and bear it, but at least Pearce gets to play the remaining three games of the season, scant consolation and let’s hope that the incompetent Steve Martin has learned a valuable lesson about being swayed by baying supporters and clamouring players.
