Wigan Athletic midfield dynamo James McCarthy could be ready for a shock return to action well ahead of schedule.

Following a nasty ankle injury sustained back in October when Bolton midfield man Fabrice Muamba caught McCarthy from behind, the young Scot was expected to be out of action until mid-February at the very least, but it looks like he could be set for a return in just 10 days time when the Latics face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, McCarthy says that Arsenal is his target and he has been given the all clear to get back to full training.

McCarthy said: “I`m hoping to be back for the Arsenal game later this month.

“It`s not 100 per cent sure, but that`s definitely the target I`ve set for myself.

“Everything`s been going according to plan, and the surgeon told me the other week he was happy for me to do whatever I felt comfortable doing.

“I`ve started kicking the ball and hopefully this week I`ll get more involved in the rest of the training.

“Evo (Richard Evans, Head of Sports Medicine) is happy with that, and now it`s all about getting back to full fitness as quickly as possible and rejoining the rest of the boys.”
