James McCarthy Is Staying Put

Highly rated Wigan Athletic midfield star James McCarthy has revealed that he intends to go nowhere despite speculation about a move to the Premier Leagues elite.

The 19 year old Republic of Ireland international only joined the Latics during the summer but his performances have been of such a high calibre that he has attracted interest from the top clubs including Arsenal who are believed to have had their chief scout watch McCarthy recently.

McCarthy himself though is totally unfazed by all the attention and he is content to concentrate on his game at Wigan, staying focused as the Latics look to secure Premier League safety at the end of what has been a tough season.

Speaking to the press following a visit to Derian House, a local Childrens Hospice, with team mate Steve Gohouri where the pair handed over a club donation of £20,000 it was obvious that McCarthy was full of humility when he said: ‘I am happy here`

“It`s been a brilliant season for me, to be making my debut in the Premier League against United and then my debut for Ireland against Brazil, a dream come true.

“Some of us are very lucky to play football and it`s good for me and Steve to come here, do something like this and see the people here. It brings you down to earth and makes you realise how privileged you are.”

McCarthy also spoke about his need to play regular football in order to develop, when he was 16 he was handed the chance to sign for Liverpool but turned it down to stay at Hamilton because going to Rafa Benitez side would have meant youth team football staying put and he became central to Hamilton`s emergence in the SPL.

The Glasgow born midfield youngster is grateful to the Latics for giving him his chance and it is obvious that he wants to repay the faith that was shown in him by boss Roberto Martinez, McCarthy continued: ‘The most important thing is to get games under your belt. Wigan have been great to me and I just need to keep working hard and not get carried away.

‘I`m not concerned about our situation. We`re good enough to stay up. I just want to keep Wigan in the Premier League and get as many games under my belt as I can.

‘It is great to be tipped to go to places, but I`ve got four years here. It was hard moving away from Hamilton but Wigan have been great. Because I`ve settled down well I`m not up the road as much as I was.`
