Wigan Athletic centre midfield player James McCarthy made his full senior competitive debut for the Republic of Ireland last night ending all media speculation on the will he, wont he play for the Irish through parentage or choose the country of his birth, Scotland.

In fairness McCarthy has stated all along that he wanted to represent the Republic of Ireland on the international stage, but with Scotland boss Craig Levein trying to persuade him otherwise there has been something of a media frenzy around which country he will choose, this was also compounded when the 20 year old was injured and pulled out of the Republic squad setting off all kinds of conspiracy theories.

Well on 87 minutes of last nights 2-1 win over Macedonia, all debate on where McCarthy will play international football was ended when the young Latics midfield man took the field of play as replacement for Robbie Keane and became a fully fledged Republic of Ireland international.
