Wigan Athletic are taking Hamilton Academicals midfield man James McArthur on a weeks trial from Monday with a view to a £1.2 million transfer at the end of the season.
McArthur is a good friend of current Latics and former Hamilton player James McCarthy who made the move to the DW Stadium last summer, the pair formed a fantastic partnership in the Accies midfield in their time together at New Douglas Park.
With 161 appearances behind him for the Accies McArthur has a wealth of first team experience and he has put in some excellent performances this season alerting West Brom and Stoke as well as the Latics to the potential of the Scotland under 21 international.
An Hamilton spokesman is quoted as saying that they would not stand in McArthurs way if a move to a bigger club was offered, he said: “As we have previously stated, we will not stand in the way of any player moving to a higher level”
“James has been a tremendous asset to our club and when he eventually leaves to further his career, it will be with our best wishes.”
Whilst Hamilton boss Billy Reid told STV: ‘He’s earned the right to go and play at a so-called bigger club at a higher level’
“I did say when the two lads who left the club last summer, that it may be a bit too soon for them, a year too soon. It’s not a year too soon for James McArthur.”
Meanwhile Latics boss Roberto Martinez admitted the Latics interest, he said: ‘James McArthur is another player that we have been following for a long time’
‘As we did in the previous window, we follow a lot of names and a lot of players – it’s about getting the right players and the right characters.
‘James McArthur is a great talent. What he has achieved at Hamilton in the SPL is remarkable.’
At 22 McArthur is at the right age to hopefully take the move in his stride and if the Latics can beat off the competition for the young Scots signature then they will have themselves another very good signing
