Wigan Athletic Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson says the club will back boss Roberto Martinez in the transfer window and that they aren’t afraid to spend big if necessary

Latics record buy, Mauro Boselli, didn’t exactly set the Premier League on fire and he was loaned back to his former club, Estudiantes of Argentina, for the entirety of last season, but there have been a number of reasons cited for the Argentine strikers failure to settle, not all of them footballing ones and it hasn’t put the club off backing the manager with a big fee if that is needed to get a certain player

Jackson said: ‘I don’t think it would necessarily put us off spending that kind of money on a player again’

‘If the budget allows it, and if Roberto wanted a player, we would spend that kind of money again, no question.

‘If we can bring in the right player for the right price, and it’s someone who the manager wanted to bring in, then that’s what we’ll do.

‘We’re trying to build a team here for the future, to try and break into the top 10 of the Premier League.’

According to sources and press reports, Latics are working on up to six new signings at the moment and by all accounts Martinez has been made available to him the biggest transfer budget the club has had in any previous window
