Vital member Paul Thorp aka Thorpyness gives us his thoughts on today’s game against Blackburn

I just want it over….

The title says it all really. The remarkable thing is that the sentiment applies to both sets of supporters in this case. Blackburn fans also just want it over and done with. They believe the exact opposite of Wigan fans, they expect gloom to be the eventual outcome, but with that faintest hope that they somehow can get out of it. We believe we are almost home and are in all liklehood going to survive, with that niggling doubt that we might just blow it all at the final hurdle. A full turnabout for some Latics who felt as the Rovers fans do not 3 months ago.

It’s a classic head and heart scenario. Heart tells me that we are pretty much already safe, head says no singing before the rotund female starts belting out her aria.

If you compare the signs going into this game with the previous encounter, then the omens seem to mostly point to a Wigan win.

We drew at the DW, and that is all that’s needed this time out. That draw was on the back of a bit of cheating on their part, and they had some help from the officials as well. We also have to remember that in the run up to that game we lost the previous eight. Everything In the run up to that game from a Wigan perspective was not ideal. We had international break the week before, which usually results in some of our team racking up as many air miles as they do pounds in their salaries for the week. All this and we still got what we need today.

Were now 3rd in the form tables and Blackburn are bottom. There have been no international jet setters this week, We have a settled confident side, Blackburn are no longer above us in the table. This time we have things pointing at us as winners.

Somehow though there is still that worry that we don’t complete the job today. The best I can come up with as a bloke is that it’s like exam day at school, when you’ve done your revision, you’ve studied the past papers. All things point to passing the test, but until you actually face the examination you’re not quite sure.

A Season ticket holding Wigan lady has summed it up far more succinctly on facebook…‘nervous and excited all at the same time…… last time I felt like this I was in labour .’

But the most succinct summing up though goes to the Gaffer. At the recent audience with Roberto, where he invited us in to say thanks for the meet and greets. I asked if we could be safe before the Wolves game so we could enjoy the party and he replied simply ….

‘We are Wigan Athletic.’
