Wigan Athletic striker Emile Heskey made his 50th appearance for England last night and played a starring role in the World Cup qualifier alongside Wayne Rooney in a comfortable 3-1 win.

Heskey was pleased to reach the milestone and it is indeed a honour for the Latics to have one of their players achieve such a record, Heskey told the press:

‘Winning 50 caps for England is an honour and it would be special in any game not many people get to do that and play for their country so many times, so it was great honour to get to 50.”

England achieved a good result in Minsk against Belarus last night considering how Belarus have faired against Germany, Argentina and Holland recently and Heskey put that down to the early contribution of Liverpools Steven Gerrard, he continued:

‘The lads did really well tonight. It’s a difficult place to come, you’ve seen their form against some really good teams and they’ve done well against them.

‘It was a splendid start from Stevie and we progressed from there. We were a bit disappointed to let a goal in, but we never let her heads go down and we carried on.’

Heskey was also impressed with the form of Manchester Uniteds Wayne Rooney and commented:

‘He’s done brilliantly, to get his goals was great for him, and Stevie got his as well and could have easily had a second.’
