Wigan Athletic have had some good news on the injury front with club skipper Gary Caldwell looking like he could make a shock comeback in Saturdays clash at West Ham, three weeks ahead of schedule.
Caldwell only returned to action in October following surgery on his hips back in the summer, but, as seems usual with players returning from long term injuries, he suffered a thigh strain against West Brom two weeks ago and was thought to be set to face at least another 5 weeks on the sidelines.
With Antolin Alcaraz facing suspension after being sent off in last weekends game against Manchester United and Emmerson Boyce still not recovered from his hamstring injury the Latics were looking at a mini defensive crisis as they travel to face bottom of the table side West Ham, but now it looks like Gary Caldwell could be set to line up alongside his brother Steven at the heart of the Wigan defence.
Speaking about Caldwell`s speedy recovery Latics boss Roberto Martinez says he didn`t think his captain would have any chance of being fit for this game but it looks like he will, Martinez said: ‘We never expected him to have any chance but as it stands he probably has a small chance of being involved.
‘It is not a surprise knowing Gary, the way he looks after himself.
‘Those little niggles that for certain players could be three, four or five weeks out, for Gary it is only a short period.’
It could be the first time two brothers have taken to the field at the same time for the Latics since Wayne and Warren Aspinall back in 1985
