Championship Round Up – Matchweek 6

Round 6 saw plenty of new faces in different shirts, with players finalising moves and managers coming and going in the Championship. Let’s take a look at the league outside of the Latics.

Firstly the results around the week:

Birmingham City 1-1 Leeds United
AFC Bournemouth 1-1 Rotherham United
Blackburn Rovers 3 -1 Wigan Athletic
Blackpool 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Bolton Wanderers 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Brentford 3-2 Brighton and Hove Albion
Cardiff City 2-4 Norwich City
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Watford
Huddersfield Town 1-2 Middlesbrough
Ipswich Town 2-0 Millwall
Reading 3-0 Fulham
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Derby County

Top 6:
1. Nottingham Forest
2. Norwich City
3. Wolverhampton Wanderers
4. Watford
5. Charlton Athletic
6. Brentford

Bottom 3:
22. Bolton Wanderers
23. Blackpool
24. Fulham

Blackpool picked up their first points of the season with a scoreless draw, the Tangerines are favourites for relegation following a mass exodus of players during the summer and were left scrambling to make a team before the beginning of the season.

Norwich City continued their impressive start despite going two goals down to fellow relegated side Cardiff City. Four unanswered second half goals away from home was surely the performance of the weekend.

Nottingham Forest are still unbeaten following their 1-1 draw against last years playoff finalist Derby County. Britt Assombalonga scored his 5th goal of the season and looked to have given Forest all three points before the former Newcastle man Leon Best levelled the score in the 82nd minute. Forest will be looking to continue their unbeaten run on Tuesday when they host struggling Fulham.

RIVALRY WATCH:

Bolton
are off to a poor start this year, and are winless in their first 6 games, which sees them in the bottom three. A 0-0 home draw to Sheffield Wednesday didn’t make matters any better as pressure is mounting on manager Dougie Freedman. Surely the Trotters fans will be hoping to see their first win at home on Tuesday when they entertain Rotherham United. From a Latics fan’s perspective, there’s nothing better than beating your rival head to head and in the table, but I’d like to see them stay in the league, the derby day rivalry is a fixture to look forward to each season.

Spotlight:

This week’s matches saw three new managers first games in charge. Chris Powell filled the 3-week vacancy left by Huddersfield Town sacking of Mark Robins following a heavy home defeat in the first game of the season. It wasn`t the best of starts for the former Charlton Athletic manager as his side lost to Middlesbrough on his home and season debut.

Oscar Garcia took over at Watford following Sannino’s resignation over internal matters, despite their good start to the season. His side also lost, this time on the road at Charlton.

Finally, Leeds United appointed Neil Redfearn as caretaker manager, once again, following the sacking of David Hockaday after only 6 games. The club is still looking for a permanent manager although, Redfearn looks to be the favourite. Leeds fans are, as always, very optimistic about their chances this year and hopes to go back to the promise land. Regardless of league position or managerial issues, be sure to catch their next match on Sky Sports.
