Former Wigan Athletic midfield star Michael O’Neill looks set to be named the new manager of Northern Ireland, following the resignation of Nigel Worthington

O’Neill, who played 66 times for the Latics, has enjoyed great success managing Shamrock Rovers, the League of Ireland club have won back to back Championships under the guidance of O’Neill, plus they also became the first Irish club to qualify for the group stages of a European competition

It is understood that, subject to personal terms being agreed, Michael O’Neill will be unveiled as new Northern Ireland boss by the beginning of next week.

The cultured midfield player was at the Latics between 1998 and 2000 and was part of the team that unfortunately lost to Manchester City in the play-off semi final back in May 1999
