Roberto Martinez made seven changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, but they still looked a cut above as Championship promotion hopefuls, Nottingham Forest were swept aside by a buoyant Latics who raced into 3-0 half time lead and finished the game 4-1 winners
Mauro Boselli, making a rare start, got the scoring underway when he headed home with aplomb a superb cross from Ronnie Stam, the Dutch defender got a yard free down the right, passed his marker and sent in a glorious ball. Boselli slipped two Forest defenders to leave himself free six yards out and plant his header passed Lee Camp, 25 minutes gone, 0-1
Next up was Maynor Figueroa, picking the ball up half-way inside the Forest half, Figgy was allowed to come forward, with the open space in front of him the Honduras international lashed a sensational strike from 30 yards out into the top far corner of Camp’s goal, 35 minutes gone, Figeuroa celebrating with a little jig, 0-2
On the stroke of half time Jordi Gomez made it three. Albert Crusat played a defence splitting ball, Gomez took one touch with his left then thundered a glorious strike with his right from 20 yards, yes you heard correctly, his right, his shot whistled passed Camp into the back of the net, 0-3
Within two minutes of the restart after the half time cuppa’s Forest had pulled a goal back, another top quality strike saw Simon Cox beat Al Habsi from 30 yards with a screamer that dipped and swerved into the Latics net, 1-3
A blot on the performance was the sending off of Antolin Alcaraz with 20 minutes to go, the Paraguay international got an early bath for two bookings which both seemed a little harsh, but it didn’t affect the result, in fact the Latics extended their lead on 90 minutes.
Substitutes Ryo Miyaichi and Callum McManaman combined to seal the Latics performance with another good goal, Miyaichi picking the ball up deep in the Latics half broke with speed, he picked out McManaman on the edge of the Forest box, the young Latics forward cut inside and feigned to shoot with his left, putting his marker, Danny Collins on his backside, McManaman turned back and hit a shot across Lee Camp and into the far bottom corner, game over, 1-4
A great display by the Latics to go through to the next round of the Capital One cup, but more importantly the game showed that we have some strength in depth for the tough season ahead
