Steve Bruce opted to blend youth with experience playing the likes of Cotterill, Kupisz and Lewis Montrose alongside seasoned veterans Kilbane, Sibierski and Brown.

The back four, however had the look of safety first with all four combatants regulars at some stage last season. Paul Scharner, apparently cut an interesting sight wearing a protective sheild following a recent nose operation

Much has been made of the need for Camara to prove himself and although the Austrian part timers were no substitute for the defences of the Premier League, the Wigan offical site suggests that Camara, who played for 65 minutes looked sharp and still retained his pace, which was one of his biggest assets in his debut season for the Latics in which he scored 12 goals.

The other goals came from Sibierski, who was doubtful earlier in the week with a thigh strain but played a full 90 minutes today and Micheal Brown with his first goal for the club.

Latics actually had the ball in the net six times but were ruled offside on three occasions and also found time to miss a penalty in the last minute,Sibierski being the culprit.

Latics now face more stiffer opponents in Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover in their next two games before returning to face Barnsley.
