Wigan Athletic new signing Paraguay international defender Antolin Alcaraz became the first ever Latics player to score at the World Cup finals when he headed home from a free kick to give the South Americans the lead against Italy in tonights opening Group F game in Cape Town.

Alcaraz only joined the Latics last month from Belgium club FC Bruges and he has yet to make an appearance for Roberto Martinez` side so most Wigan supporters were looking forward to seeing the latest addition to the back four in action and the 27 year old didn`t disappoint with a solid display and he scored the opening goal to boot.

Paraguay will be favourites alongside Italy to qualify from Group F and progress through to the knock-out stages of the competition so we should be able to get a good look at our new guy over the next few days, early glimpses look promising
